Ruth Sillars-Mathouillot has a passion for contemporary art and can often be found discovering the latest modern masterpieces at the Mudam museum; just a few minutes walk from her office at Banque Pictet & Cie in the financial district. She takes you on a journey across the city to reveal her two favourite places in Luxembourg.
“I chose the Mudam as my favourite place in Luxembourg because I quite simply love the building: it´s bright and airy, and it´s got a real contemporary feel. It’s the sort of place, because it´s so close to my work and home, I can visit at lunchtime, or in the evening, and there are always interesting events and activities to enjoy,” enthuses Ruth who works as an oversight manager for the private equity side of the depository bank.
During the summer months, Ruth can be found tending to her herbs and vegetables on her allotment, another favourite spot in the city.
“I chose my “veggie patch” because it’s a little bit of green in life that I like. My husband and I live in an apartment in Kirchberg and we don’t have a garden, so the Fonds Kirchberg has organised for allotments to be available to residents, so it´s a great little place to grow some vegetables, spend some time in the sun, and it´s right in the heart of an urban landscape, so its quite an interesting contrast!” points out Ruth whose apartment is a short walk from her office on Avenue JFK.
Worklife balance is important for Ruth, who is expecting her first child in March.
“I really enjoy being in Luxembourg because for me it’s a perfect size. It’s the sort of place where you can easily balance out life and work. Work has great opportunities as one of the financial centres in Europe but it still has so much going on, on your doorstep. So it offers all the opportunities that you would expect in a larger European city but at the same time stays very small so you can easily do work, going out, sport, its all really easily available to you“.
Next week in Episode 2, discover what Luxembourg has to offer Nigel Fielding, the outgoing CEO of HSBC Luxembourg, when we reveal his two favourite spots in Luxembourg.
